Dr. Babu serves the Principal of the B.M.S. College of Engineering in Bangalore, India.
The GEDC has proved a valuable opportunity to fine-tune the practices in the best interest of the student community. As an outcome of association with GEDC, the institution has broadened its international linkages.

What are your top five priorities as a Principal? 

  • To ensure wholesome education to the students
  • To create the state of the art facilities for Research
  • To build faculty capacity
  • To ensure and grow the stakeholders relationship

What have been your major accomplishments since becoming Principal?

  • Setting sense of direction in terms of a well-knit Strategic Plan indicating the goals for BMSCE and a clear concerted framework to achieve them
  • An institution can never develop in isolation. Thrust was given towards developing strategic partnerships with reputed institutions /organizations in terms of joint teaching, curriculum development, and collaborative research, joint guiding of student projects, collaborative working on industry sponsored projects, faculty exchange/sabbaticals etc
  • Promoting research culture among faculty and students resulting in extensive research funding and thus the Research Outcomes.
  • Played lead role in successful implementation of Outcome Based Education(OBE)
  • Progressively implemented Academic Autonomy by involving all stakeholders in curriculum design and development and implementation. Ensured curriculums is relevant and meet the needs of the industry and students with focus on thrust areas.
  • Administrative decentralization through proper delegation of powers and responsibilities.
  • Embarked expansion in terms of new programmes, intake, infrastructure and facilities in terms of building, equipment’s and HR.
  • Cultivating Leadership in others. Identifying skills and knowledge and encourage them to take up leadership roles and responsibilities.

The outcomes are as follows:

  • Accreditation of all UG programmes under the new format (Washington Signatory) under review by International observers
  • BMSCE is accredited with ‘A’ grade by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) with CGPA of 3.41 on four point scale
  • The College is TEQIP Institution: Phase-I: performance score of 9.2 on a 10 point scale; Phase-II (on going): recipient of additional grants owing to its best performance in this phase
  • Excellent result and placement record of students
  • Nurtured and developed a strong alumni network
  • Created centers of excellence and incubation centres
  • Generated IPR policy for the Institute
  • Enhanced rate of student internships

Where do you plan to take the BMS College of Engineering five years from now?

  • To produce at least 20% graduate as entrepreneurs
  • Accreditation of laboratories (transform them as centers of excellence/learning)
  • Innovative curriculum and to match the global standards
  • Blended learning: enhance the use of technology
  • To create BMSCE MOOCs
  • To strengthen relationship with foreign universities to connect the faculty and student to enhance the learning outcomes

At BMS College of Engineering, what is the graduation rate of female engineers?

  • The freedom and respect every student enjoy irrespective of the gender on the campus
  • The graduation of female engineers at BMSCE is about 35%
  • The faculty gender ratio is 50:50
  • The female engineers at BMSCE are very focused, fearless and confident
  • There is no gender bias; the female students out-perform their counterpart in academics/co-curricular activities
  • Equity Assurance Plan-Slow learners are identified and necessary remedial measures are imparted

What are some programs which may increase enrollment of young female leaders in engineering?

  • Architecture
  • Computer Science and Engineering; and
  • Electronics and communication

How would you characterize the current relations between BMS College of Engineering and the Corporate and Industry world? What are some of the projects that you are implementing local companies?

BMSCE acknowledges the impact of industry affiliation on education. Over past few years, there has been substantial increase in relationship with corporate and industry world, this can be mainly attributed to the institution’s progress in the area of Research and Innovation. A good number of MOUs have been signed with the Industry/research establishments for collaborative works – Sponsored laboratories, Industry sponsored research projects, student internships, extension lectures by experts from industry among others. The curriculum holds the key and industry being a major stake holder in the process, the acceptance of graduates by the Industry is high. The college updates the curriculum in close collaboration with industry experts. The college is also a beta partner with few industry in developing products, BOSCH, WIPRO, ABB are a few to name; The increased interaction with industry has provided platform for exchange of ideas amongst students, faculty and the industry. The institution is fostering more such linkages to ensure that our students have employable skills and they stay relevant to ever-changing requirement of industry.

  • Collaboration between institutions to facilitate student projects and enable them to face global challenges and needs
  • Faculty exposure through sabbatical

How has the GEDC helped your university achieve the goal of making your institution a more global environment?

The GEDC has proved a valuable opportunity to fine-tune the practices in the best interest of the student community. As an outcome of association with GEDC, the institution has broadened its international linkages. Sustainability and innovation are the prime considerations for such initiatives.

  • Involvement of all stakeholders in curriculum design, development and implementation and more significantly the Industry participation on various Boards BOG, AC, BOS, BOE. 
  • Sharing information and data on best practices and effectively implementing the best practices at BMSCE has resulted in more number of online learning modules in TLPs.
  • Linkages have paved way to exchange of faculty, cooperative research activities and organizing joint events like global conferences, symposia and workshops. 
  • Apart from providing an opportunity to understand different cultures in a globalized economy, students who participate in these programs get to gain a first-hand international experience and transform into global citizens.
