Samer Madanat, Dean of Engineering at NYU AD, is the Xenel Distinguished Professor of Engineering, former Chair of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and former Director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. 

He received a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Jordan in 1986, and a M.S and Ph.D. in Transportation Systems from MIT in 1988 and 1991 respectively. Madanat’s research and teaching interests are in the area of Transportation Infrastructure Management, with an emphasis on modeling facility performance, the development of optimal management policies under uncertainty, and developing solutions for improving the sustainability of transportation systems. 

From 2001 to 2011, Madanat served as the Editor-in-Chief of the ASCE Journal of Infrastructure Systems. He is currently Associate Editor of the European Journal of Transportation and Logistics, and an editorial board member of Transportation Research C, Transportation Research D, and Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Systems. He serves on several advisory committees, including for the National Research Council, and has served as external reviewer of Civil Engineering departments at MIT, Carnegie Mellon University and Tongji University. Several of his former students and post-doctoral researchers are currently faculty members at universities in the US and around the world.
