Dr. Nomcebo H. Mthombeni is currently the acting Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at Durban University of Technology. She has previously served as the Chair of the Department of Civil and Chemical Engineering at the University of South Africa, and as the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Durban University of Technology.  

She is also involved in a project with various stakeholders that aims to develop a framework for bridging the gap between academia and industry in the water, sanitation, and hygiene sectors in South Africa. This initiative seeks to improve collaboration and knowledge sharing to address pressing water challenges in the region. By fostering partnerships between researchers, businesses, and government agencies, she hopes to drive innovation and create lasting solutions for water management in South Africa.  

Driven by her passion for engineering education, Dr. Mthombeni is currently involved in projects seeking to implement novel teaching approaches that engage students and enhance their learning experiences. She is committed to fostering a student-centered learning environment that encourages active participation, collaboration, and hands-on experimentation.  

She holds a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Tshwane University of Technology. Her research interests are in water treatment technologies, nanotechnology, renewable energy production. She is dedicated to advancing sustainable water treatment methods, which will have a positive impact on industries as well as communities. In 2012, Dr. Mthombeni was awarded the prestigious S2A3 Bronze Medal from Tshwane University of Technology, underscoring her outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of chemical engineering.
